Fleet update: Hyde Park relocation

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

I-GO Car Sharing has moved the two I-GO cars previously located at 5230 S. Lake Park Ave. to 5420 S. Lake Park Ave. The new location is in the Hyde Park Shopping Center parking lot on S. Lake Park between 54th Street and 54th Place. Our space faces S. Lake Park and is near Office Depot. The two cars are a blue Honda Element utility (vehicle ID #4487) and a silver Nissan Versa hatchback (vehicle ID #4479). The relocation is due to construction related to the Harper Square residential/retail development.

Because this is one of our oldest I-GO locations, we’ve done our best to inconvenience our members as little as possible. Our new location is just two blocks south of our old spaces. I-GO also has car locations at Woodlawn and 52nd, Cornell and 50th, Regents Park Apartments (5020 S. Lake Shore Dr.), and the Ballys at 47th and S. Lake Park Ave.

Log in with your Member ID number at www.igocars.org to reserve any of these vehicles.

Which is to say that I-GO is making progress on its plans to deploy 36 electric vehicles with solar charging canopies across the Chicagoland area. By equipping our charging stations with solar canopies, we’re creating a clean-energy closed loop that benefits the environment, the economy, and sustainable transportation in a big way.

Part of our efforts are focused on Evanston, where we’re looking at two city-owned locations. Trib Local reporter Jonathan Bullington covers that story in that publication’s Evanston edition.

I-GO joined WXRT Radio and Shedd Aquarium last night to support the Shedd’s first Concert for the Great Lakes. The Dock at Montrose Beach hasn’t featured a mainstream headliner like Guster before, and those in attendence enjoyed a rare North Side beachfront rock concert. I-GO put in the good word for car sharing at the show, which raised awareness of the need for Great Lakes conservation. Hats off to the Shedd and WXRT for getting out that message, and for inviting us as a sponsor. We’ll look forward to the next concert in the new annual series in 2012!

SolarChargedDriving.com covers I-GO’s EV plans

“There are some skeptics who say, ‘Well, electric cars. Yeah that’s great, but the power is coming from coal-fired power plants. You’re just switching one source of pollution for another.’ Not so with what we’re doing. It’s going to be completely clean straight down the line.”

That quote come from Jonathan Goldman, project manager of I-GO’s Electric Vehicle Program, which has steadily been taking shape for quite some time and will soon become a fully charged reality.  Goldman was interviewed for a recent article posted on SolarChargedDriving.com, which covers a niche near and dear to I-GO’s eco-friendly heart.

The article covers I-GO’s plans to build 18 solar-charging electric vehicle stations in Chicago. As the stations appear, so, too, will more EVs in the I-GO fleet. Locations have been scouted and we’re excited to be moving forward on this bright, sunny response to our nation’s need for transportation powered by clean energy. Stay tuned for more news on our EV Program in the coming weeks and months!
