University program FAQ
You share access to the I-GO vehicles located on campus and throughout the Chicago metro area with other members. Members reserve cars online or by phone (including via a mobile site on web-enabled smart phones), self-access cars with an electronic smart card, pay by the hour according to one of our four driving plans, and don’t have to pay for gas, insurance, or maintenance. See How it Works for more details.

How much does I-GO cost for university program participants?
Participants pay a discounted membership sign-up fee of just $25 for the first year of membership—a $50 savings off the normal fee. The annual renewal fee is $25 thereafter, and participants pay normal I-GO rates for trip reservations according to the driving plan they choose. All driving plans include gas, insurance, and 24/7 on-call assistance.

What insurance does I-GO provide?
Our under-21 coverage meets state minimums for accidents—$5,000 per person limit per accident for medical payments. Our Damage Fee Waiver Program, however, reduces out-of-pocket cost for the principal account holder in the event of an accident for which the driver is found to be at fault. Please see our Damage Fee Waiver FAQ for details on the program and how to sign up for it.

You can reserve any of the I-GO vehicles in our fleet. I-GO maintains more than 200 cars in more than 30 Chicago neighborhoods and several suburbs. Most of our cars are also conveniently located near or next to CTA bus routes and train lines and stations—especially handy if you opt for the Chicago Card Plus/I-GO Card, a joint transit smart card developed by the CTA and I-GO that provides you with two online accounts and access to I-GO cars, CTA buses and trains, and suburban Pace buses.

Can I let my friends use my I-GO smart card to access and use vehicles?
No. Only approved I-GO members can reserve and drive I-GO cars. You could lose your I-GO membership and be fined if we learn you have given your I-GO smart card or other private account information to a non-member. Furthermore, if an accident occurred during such a trip, you would be held financially responsible and our insurance would not cover the accident.

I’m interested in I-GO’s environmental mission. Can I get more involved than just being a member?
Definitely. We welcome your help. I-GO often has opportunities for volunteers at events we participate in—many of which are on university and college campuses—and you’ll earn one hour of free driving credit for every hour you volunteer. We’re also active on Facebook and Twitter, so be sure to join our online community of green-minded advocates.
