How it Works

Want to learn more about how I-GO works? It’s easy!

Car sharing is a service that provides members with access to a fleet of eco-friendly vehicles on an hourly basis. Once you become a member, you can reserve any car you like in advance and drive it for as long as your reservation. Unlike car rental, you pay by the hour—which means the most cost-effective trips are short in time and distance. (However, many cars in I-GO’s fleet are available for reasonable all-day rates as well.)

Here are the basics:

To reserve a car

To reserve a car, you can call 773-278-4446 and use our automated phone reservation system or speak with a Member Services representative. The easiest and most popular way, though, is to log in to to our online reservation system at www.igocars.org with your Member ID# and password. Once there, you can select by neighborhood, vehicle type, amenities, and specify the estimated duration of your trip.

When you get to the car

Take your I-GO Smart Card with you to unlock the door.  Hold the card over the card reader (pictured, right), located on the driver’s side front windshield, until you hear the doors unlock and the light on the card reader turns green.

Remove the key and the black fob from the keypad console device (pictured, left) in the glove compartment and start the car.  (If it’s a Prius electric-gas hybrid, and you need tips on how to start the car, check the simple instructions on the last page of the Member Manual, also located in the glove compartment.)

You can call I-GO or 911 (for emergencies) from the keypad at any time during your trip.  Press #1 to call I-GO and #2 to dial 911. The sound is activated from a speaker in the dashboard. Please be careful not to unplug the keypad.

During your trip

Remember to take the ignition key with you every time you exit the car.  You will use the key (NOT your Smart Card) to lock and unlock doors during your trip.

When your trip ends

  1. Insert the black fob with the attached key back into the keypad in the glovebox. This is very important in order to end your trip and ensure that we invoice you properly.
  2. Get out of the car and hold your Smart Card over the card reader until the doors lock and the light on the card reader turns red.

For more info, check out our Member Manual online or in each car.

ENJOY YOUR TRIP!
