The opening of the 6.35-acre museum in 1999 heralded new opportunities to build on the Academy’s legacy of scientific inquiry, offering the public much more than dioramas and taxidermied animals. Complete with permanent exhibitions including a Butterfly Haven, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum became an interactive experience for adults and children alike.

Brian Marchese was a marathon runner battling a herniated disc when he discovered the therapeutic modality that could not only address his injuries, but also the need for resilience and balance to break the injury cycle. As a certified advanced rolfer, Brian has worked closely with special populations, including children with neuromuscular disorders at Children’s Memorial Hospital. Rolfing addresses sets of relationships within your body’s connective tissue network to integrate your body structurally and functionally in gravity. The combination of applied pressure and your own synchronized micromovements reposition the connective tissue to permit a more effective and efficient pattern to emerge.

Uncommon Ground is an I-GO fave through and through. Their original Wrigleyville location endures as a cozy café with excellent organic food and drink and a relaxed vibe. The newer Rogers Park location is simply amazing: organic gourmet cuisine and cocktails; a charming, acoustically superb cabaret-size dining room with regular music acts and local artists’ work; and an ultra-green building design from top to bottom. We’re talking extensive rooftop garden, solar panels providing power to the kitchen, furniture made from fallen trees in Jackson Park, and electrical outlets for plug-in vehicles in the lot outside. Add the monthly Green Room Sessions featuring environmental entrepreneurs and the summer’s weekly farmer’s market with its honky tonk music hour, and it’s a package deal hard to top.
